CAD for Manufacture

Prepare Simple CAD for the Manufacturing Workflow You Choose

Turn your existing CAD files, technical drawings, sketches, PDFs, images, dimensions, or other references into CAD prepared for CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing, prototyping, and other manufacturing workflows.

SYNCCAD helps prepare simple CAD files for parts, plates, brackets, enclosures, panels, prototypes, and other clearly defined designs.

You don't need to start with a finished manufacturing CAD file. Provide the references you already have and tell us how you intend to use the CAD. We'll review the scope before production.

What You Can Send Us

You can start with the references you already have.

Existing CAD

Provide an existing CAD file when available for modification or manufacturing preparation.

Technical Drawing

A dimensioned technical drawing can provide the geometry, dimensions, tolerances, views, and notes needed for the CAD task.

Sketch

A clear sketch can work when the important geometry and dimensions are clearly identified

Image

A clear image can help communicate the intended shape, but additional dimensions may be required.

PDF

A PDF drawing can be used as a reference for eligible CAD preparation.

What Information Should You Include?

  • Existing CAD or reference drawing

  • Overall dimensions

  • Feature dimensions

  • Hole diameter and locations

  • Slot dimensions

  • Thickness

  • Radii

  • Angles

  • Units

  • Intended manufacturing method

  • Material where relevant

  • Tolerances where relevant

  • Required output format

  • Manufacturer-specific requirements where available

  • Revision instructions

Example:

Prepare the attached CAD for laser cutting.

Overall size: 150 × 100 mm.

Material thickness: 3 mm.

Four mounting holes: Ø8 mm.

All profiles should be closed.

Units: mm.

Required output: DXF.

This gives us a much clearer basis for reviewing the request.

CAD for Visuals for Different Workflows

CNC Machining

CAD can provide geometry and drawing references for simple machining projects.

Useful information may include:

  • Overall dimensions

  • Feature dimensions

  • Hole locations

  • Profiles

  • Depth information

  • Tolerances where relevant

  • Material

  • Manufacturing method

Final machining requirements should be confirmed with the chosen manufacturer.

Laser Cutting

2D CAD profiles can be used as references for laser-cutting workflows.

Important information may include:

  • Closed profiles

  • Internal holes

  • Slots

  • Overall dimensions

  • Units

  • Material thickness

  • Required file format

Final cutting requirements should be confirmed with the chosen manufacturer.

3D Printing

3D CAD models can provide geometry references for 3D-printing workflows.

Important information may include:

  • Overall dimensions

  • Wall thickness

  • Holes and openings

  • Feature dimensions

  • Required output format

  • Intended printing process where known

Final suitability for 3D printing should be confirmed based on the selected printer, process, material, and manufacturing requirements.

What Makes a Good CAD for Manufacture Request?

A good request clearly answers five questions:

What?

What CAD geometry needs to be created or modified?

From What?

Which CAD file, drawing, sketch, image, or PDF should be used?

How Large?

Is the intended workflow CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing, prototyping, or another method?

What Changes?

If modifying existing CAD, exactly what needs to change?

What Output?

Which CAD format does the manufacturer require?

The clearer these points are, the easier it is to review the scope and prepare the CAD file.

Common Problems to Avoid

01.

Missing Manufacturing Method

The required CAD approach can depend on whether the part will be machined, laser cut, printed, or used for another workflow.

03.

Unknown Units

Clearly identify whether dimensions are in mm, inches, or another unit.

02.

Missing Material or Thickness

For many manufacturing workflows, material and thickness can affect the required CAD information.

04.

Unclear Tolerances

If specific tolerances are required, identify them clearly in the supplied drawing or instructions.

05.

Open Profiles

For cutting workflows, identify whether profiles need to be closed and provide suitable geometry requirements.

06.

Wrong Output Expectations

Confirm the CAD format required by your chosen manufacturer before requesting the file.

Supported Reference Types

Depending on the task, your reference may include:

  • Existing CAD ➞ Modification or manufacturing CAD preparation

  • Technical Drawing ➞ Dimensions, geometry and manufacturing references
  • Sketch  ➞ Basic shape and design intent
  • PDF ➞ Drawing and reference information
  • Image ➞ Visual geometry reference
  • Marked-Up Drawing ➞ Clearly identified revisions

The actual suitability of each reference is determined during scope review.

Important Scope & Limitations
