CAD for CNC Machining: Preparing CAD Files for CNC Workflows

CNC machining uses digital geometry to define the shape and features of a part. A suitable CAD file can help communicate the intended geometry to a CNC machining workflow.

SYNCCAD can help prepare eligible, clearly defined CAD files for simple CNC-related requests based on drawings, sketches, images, measurements, or existing CAD files.

The CAD preparation itself does not replace the manufacturer's process planning, machining setup, tooling decisions, or manufacturability review.

CAD for CNC machining refers to preparing digital geometry that can be used as a reference or input for a CNC machining workflow.

Depending on the part and manufacturing process, CAD information may describe:

  • Overall part geometry
  • Holes and openings
  • Pockets and cutouts
  • Slots
  • Profiles and contours
  • Mounting features
  • Thickness
  • Chamfers or other defined features
  • Dimensions and drawing information

The exact CAD requirements depend on the CNC machine, machining process, material, software, and manufacturer.

Simple Machined Parts

CAD can communicate the geometry of relatively simple mechanical parts such as plates, brackets, spacers, and other defined components.

Mounting Plates and Brackets

A CAD model or drawing can define hole patterns, profiles, slots, and overall dimensions.

CNC Prototypes

CAD files can provide a digital reference for prototype parts before fabrication.

Existing Part Recreation

An existing component can sometimes be recreated from measurements, drawings, photographs, or other references when sufficient information is available.

Design Modifications

An existing CAD file can be updated when the required changes are clearly defined.

A useful CNC-related CAD request should include enough information to define the requested geometry.

Provide, where applicable:

  • Existing CAD file
  • Dimensioned drawing
  • Sketch
  • Clear reference images
  • Overall dimensions
  • Feature dimensions
  • Hole sizes and locations
  • Thickness
  • Units
  • Required output format
  • Revision instructions
  • Manufacturer requirements, if already known

If the manufacturer has specific CAD requirements, include them with the request.

The appropriate format depends on the intended CNC workflow.

Common possibilities include:

STEP

STEP is often useful for exchanging 3D CAD geometry between different software environments.

DWG or DXF

These formats may be useful for 2D drawing or profile-based workflows when required by the receiving system.

STL

STL represents mesh geometry and may be appropriate for specific workflows, but it should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a structured CAD model.

The required output format should be confirmed with the intended manufacturer or software before requesting the CAD work.

Dimensions

Clearly defined dimensions are important when preparing CAD from drawings, sketches, or images.

Units

Always identify whether dimensions are in millimeters, inches, or another unit.

Tolerances

If specific tolerances are required, they should be provided in the reference drawing or request.

SYNCCAD does not independently determine engineering tolerances.

Material

Material information can affect manufacturing decisions. Include it when it is already defined for the part.

Feature Accessibility

A CAD model can describe geometry, but the manufacturer must determine whether the required features can actually be machined using available tooling and machine access.

Surface and Finish Requirements

Surface finish, coating, heat treatment, and similar manufacturing requirements should be communicated separately where applicable.

Missing Dimensions

A drawing or image may show the shape but not provide enough dimensions to define the geometry.

Unclear Units

A file without clear units can create ambiguity about the intended physical size.

Incomplete Views

A 2D drawing may not show every feature needed to construct a complete 3D model.

Unclear Tolerances

If tolerances are not specified, the CAD file should not be treated as defining manufacturing tolerances that were never provided.

Overlapping or Duplicate Geometry

2D CAD geometry can contain overlapping lines, duplicate entities, or open profiles that need attention before use in some workflows.

1. Submit Your References

Provide the drawing, sketch, image, existing CAD file, or measurements that define the requested part.

2. Describe the Required CAD Work

Explain whether you need a new CAD file, a modification, a conversion, or another clearly defined CAD task.

3. Scope Review

SYNCCAD reviews the available information and determines whether the request fits an eligible Simple CAD Job.

4. Confirm Scope and Price

Eligible Simple CAD Jobs are priced at $48.

More complex or insufficiently defined requests may require additional review or a custom quote.

5. Payment and CAD Preparation

Work begins after payment is received and all required references and information are complete.

6. CAD Delivery

The agreed CAD output is delivered according to the confirmed scope.

For eligible Simple CAD Jobs, the target delivery time is 48 hours after payment and receipt of all required references and information.

SYNCCAD prepares CAD files based on the supplied references and confirmed scope.

A CAD file does not by itself confirm that a part can be successfully machined.

SYNCCAD does not provide CNC process planning, tooling selection, machine setup, engineering validation, structural analysis, or a guarantee of manufacturability.

The customer and manufacturer remain responsible for verifying:

  • Material
  • Tolerances
  • Tool access
  • Machine capabilities
  • Workholding
  • Cutting parameters
  • Surface finish
  • Final manufacturability
  • Final part acceptance

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about our company.

Yes, if the drawing contains sufficient information and the request falls within the supported scope of an eligible CAD job.

Can a DWG file be converted to DXF?

This may be possible depending on the source file, required output, and supported workflow. Some drawing information or application-specific features may not transfer exactly.

No. SYNCCAD prepares CAD files. The customer selects and works with the manufacturer for physical production.

Yes. Provide the source CAD file together with clear instructions describing the required changes.

No. Required tolerances should come from the customer's design requirements or applicable manufacturing documentation.

No. $48 applies to eligible Simple CAD Jobs with a clearly defined scope. More complex requests may require additional review or a custom quote.

The target delivery time is 48 hours after payment is received and all required references and information are complete.

No. The manufacturer must verify the CAD file against its own equipment, tooling, process, material, tolerances, and manufacturing requirements.
