Turn 2D Profiles Into Simple 2.5D CAD Models
Some parts start as a simple 2D profile but also require depth, thickness, pockets, holes, slots, or stepped features.
2.5D CAD is useful for these types of straightforward parts.
SYNCCAD can prepare eligible 2.5D CAD models from technical drawings, sketches, PDFs, images, dimensions, and existing CAD references.

What We Can Help With
- 2.5D CAD Modeling
- Extruded Profiles
- Holes & Slots
- Pockets & Recesses
- Simple Stepped Geometry
- 2.5D CAD Modification
Typical 2.5D CAD Projects
2.5D CAD can be useful for simple components such as:
Mounting plates
Machined plates
Parts with pockets
Parts with slots and cutouts
Simple fixtures
Prototype parts
If your design contains complex 3D geometry or requires engineering decisions, the request may need additional review before it can be accepted.
Panels
Flat brackets with depth
Components with stepped features
Basic tooling components
What You Can Send Us
You can start with the references you already have.
2D Profile or Technical Drawing
A dimensioned 2D drawing can provide the profile, dimensions, views, and feature information needed for the 2.5D CAD task.
Sketch
A clear sketch can be used when the important geometry, dimensions, and depth information are identified.
A PDF drawing can be used as a reference for eligible 2.5D CAD preparation.
Image
A PDF drawing can be used as a reference for eligible CAD preparation.
Existing CAD
Provide an existing 2D or 3D CAD file when available for modification or further preparation.
What Information Should You Include?
- Overall dimensions
- Profile dimensions
- Thickness or depth
- Hole diameter
- Hole locations
- Slot dimensions
- Pocket dimensions
- Pocket depth
- Step dimensions
- Radii
- Angles
- Units
- Required output format
- Revision instructions
- Any important geometry requirements
Example:
Create a 2.5D CAD model from the attached drawing.
Overall size: 120 × 80 mm.
Thickness: 10 mm.
Four mounting holes: Ø8 mm.
Center locations are shown on the drawing.
Pocket depth: 3 mm.
Units: mm.
Required output: STEP.
This gives us a much clearer basis for reviewing the request.
2.5D CAD for Different Workflows
CNC Machining
2.5D CAD can provide geometry references for simple machining projects involving profiles, pockets, holes, slots, and defined depths.
Important information may include:
- Overall dimensions
- Profile geometry
- Hole locations
- Pocket dimensions
- Pocket depths
- Step dimensions
- Tolerances where relevant
- Material
- Manufacturing method
- Final machining requirements should be confirmed with the chosen manufacturer.
Prototyping
2.5D CAD can be useful for prototype plates, brackets, mounting components, fixtures, panels, and simple mechanical parts.

The agreed CAD output is delivered within the confirmed timeframe.
For eligible Simple CAD Jobs, delivery is targeted within 48 hours after payment and all required references and information are complete.
What Makes a Good 2.5D CAD Request?
A good request clearly answers five questions:
What?
What 2.5D geometry needs to be created or modified?
From What?
Which drawing, sketch, image, PDF, 2D profile, or existing CAD file should be used?
How Large?
What are the important dimensions, depths, and units?
What Changes?
If modifying existing CAD, exactly what needs to change?
What Output?
Which CAD format do you need?
The clearer these points are, the easier it is to review the scope and prepare the CAD file.
Common Problems to Avoid
01.
Missing Dimensions
A top-view image may show the shape but not the exact size or depth. Provide known dimensions wherever possible.
03.
Unclear Hole or Slot Details
Identify hole diameters, slot dimensions, locations, and spacing.
02.
Missing Depth Information
A 2D profile alone may not define the thickness, extrusion depth, pocket depth, or step height.
04.
Unknown Units
Clearly identify whether dimensions are in mm, inches, or another unit.
05.
Conflicting Dimensions
If different references show different dimensions, identify which reference or revision should be followed.
06.
Unclear Revisions
Instead of:
Please make the pocket deeper.
Use:
Change the pocket depth from 3 mm to 5 mm. Keep the pocket location and profile unchanged.
Supported Reference Types
Depending on the task, your reference may include:
- Technical Drawing ➞ Dimensions, profiles, depths, and geometry
- Sketch ➞ Basic shape and design intent
- PDF ➞ Drawing and reference information
- Image ➞ Visual geometry reference
- Existing CAD ➞ Modification or further CAD preparation
- Marked-Up Drawing ➞ Clearly identified revisions
The actual suitability of each reference is determined during scope review.

Frequently asked questions
Here are some common questions about our company.
Yes. A suitable drawing can be used when the profile, dimensions, depths, and other required geometry are sufficiently defined.
Can a DWG file be converted to DXF?
This may be possible depending on the source file, required output, and supported workflow. Some drawing information or application-specific features may not transfer exactly.
Yes. A sketch can be used when the important geometry, dimensions, units, and depth information are clear.
Yes, when their dimensions, locations, and depths are clearly defined and within the agreed scope.
Yes. Existing CAD can be used for modification or further 2.5D CAD preparation when the requested changes are clearly defined.
STEP may be suitable for many 3D CAD workflows. The required output format should be confirmed during scope review.
